In the 19th century, hundreds of Aalten residents emigrated to the United States in search of land, work and a better life. A number of them are known to have participated in the American Civil War. As far as is known, they all served in the armies of the Northern states (the Union). <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The American Civil War<\/a> (1861\u20131865) was an armed conflict in the United States between the Northern states (the Union) and the Southern states (the Confederacy). Bloody battles and campaigns took place in many states. The war began with a Confederate attack on Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 12, 1861. In June 1865, the last Confederate armies surrendered, and the Union emerged victorious. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
