Aalten, Bredevoort and the surrounding districts were formerly divided into wards known as ‘rotten’. A ‘rotmeester‘ (ward supervisor) was appointed for each ward. Their task was to convey official messages and other instructions from the central administration in Bredevoort to the residents of the district.
